Onondaga Hill Middle School
ELA Support Class
Mrs. Cibik

ELA Support class involves small group instruction for fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students to help them achieve the New York State learning standards. I meet with each group every other day for 42 minutes. During this time, I provide pre-teaching and/ or re-teaching to support the English Language Arts curriculum at each grade level. Lessons and activities are geared to the four areas of language arts: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. My goal is to develop readers who can think deeply about texts and apply strategies to figure out the meaning of challenging words and comprehend written material.

Homework: An ongoing homework assignment for the year is to read a minimum of 25 books a year. This will help students to practice the skills and strategies being taught in class. At the beginning of each week, all students will be required to update their book log in their portfolio. Occasionally, a student(s) will be required to complete an assignment outside of class. Most of the time, all tasks are completed during the class period.
Homework assigned form content area teachers cannot be completed during ELA Support. However, I will be available to assist students with their homework during I/A period.

Grading: All tasks completed by the students are evaluated. Various assessments are administered throughout the year to monitor each student's progress. I do not give number grades, but comments are given every five weeks for students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades.
Fifth grade students receive a progress report at the end of the first semester and in June. It is my goal to attend all parent-teacher conferences in the fall and spring. If there is a scheduling conflict during this time, I would be happy to reschedule a conference at your convenience. I feel communication between the home and school is of utmost importance for all students.

Materials: Students are required to bring a pencil and the novel that they are currently reading to class. This will provide reading material for them if they have completed an assigned task before the period has ended. All other materials will be provided unless they are requested.

Class Rules:

  • Be on time for class.
  • Bring all necessary materials to class.
  • Complete class work as assigned.
  • Be cooperative and respectful to all.

I address behavioral problems by warning students, moving their seats, calling home, and assigning teacher detentions. If these methods do not promote the desired behavior, then a discipline referral will be sent to the office.

You will find on my staff web site links to other reading resource sites. Many of these involve suggested book lists and activities to augment reading skills.

You may contact me at 426-3457. I have voice mail, and I will return calls as soon as possible. I can also be contacted via e-mail at ccibik@westhillschools.org. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Your support is greatly appreciated.
