Westhill High School Engages in Civic Dialogue at Legislative Breakfast

On Friday, December 8th, Westhill High School Library hosted the Central New York Library Resources Council’s (CLRC) annual Legislative Breakfast, which was catered by our own WHS Food Service Department.  The purpose of the gathering was for librarians and advocates representing school, public, and academic libraries to meet with New York State legislators to discuss the legislative priorities outlined by the New York Library Association (NYLA) and explore ways these priorities could positively impact the local community.  

One unique aspect of Westhill's involvement in this civic event was the participation of Mrs. Johnson's Advanced Placement (AP) Government class. For weeks leading up to the Legislative Breakfast, students delved into in-depth research on the NYLA's legislative priorities. They translated their findings into engaging and informative infographics, which were proudly displayed throughout the library.

As attendees began arriving, they were invited to engage in a meet-and-greet and poster session, providing students with the invaluable opportunity to present their research directly to the legislators and/or their staffers, as well as other attendees. This interactive session allowed for insightful discussions on critical issues related to library services, education, and community development.

After the meet-and-greet and poster session, a warm welcome was given by WHS librarian Jessica Regitano, followed by speeches from superintendent Steve Dunham and CLRC director Ryan Perry, and students were given the chance to sit alongside the attendees and engage in small group discussions with the legislators. This direct interaction not only showcased the students' dedication to their research, but also allowed them to express their perspectives on how legislative priorities could impact them and their community. Mrs. Johnson's AP Government class played a pivotal role in elevating the event beyond a simple gathering. Their active involvement demonstrated the importance of incorporating students into discussions about legislative priorities, emphasizing the role young minds can play in shaping the future of their communities.

As the Legislative Breakfast concluded, the impact of the event was palpable. Westhill High School not only served as a venue for meaningful dialogue but also proved that the spirit of civic engagement is alive and well within its student body. The collaboration between the school, the Central New York Library Resources Council, and the New York State legislators exemplified the power of community partnerships in driving positive change. The event was not only a testament to the school's commitment to fostering community engagement, but also an opportunity for students to actively participate in the democratic process.
