New York State Champions
What every high school athlete dreams about became a reality for two Westhill teams this fall. The girls’ volleyball team and the boys’ soccer team both reached their goal of becoming New York State Champions.
The girls’ volleyball team goes down in history this fall as the first volleyball team to earn Westhill a State title. On November 18, the girls’ finished their undefeated season with a win over reigning State Champion, Owego High School. The Westhill volleyball team also earned the Sportsmanship Award for the State tournament. Rounding out their volleyball careers and leading the Warriors were seniors Montanna Gedney, Mackenize Martin, Brigid Heinrich, Emma Shampine and Aubrey Thomson. Westhill was also led by freshman, Kate Heinrich and Gracelyn O’Connell; sophomores Morgan Richardson and Katie Culligan and juniors Sara Galante, Jillian Wicks, Jacob Daniul, Megan Redmond, Sarah Schwartz and Gianna Militi.
On November 11, the Westhill boys’ soccer team earned their first State Championship in 26 years with a 1-0 win over Briarcliff. This was the boys’ third trip to the State Championships in as many years. The boys’ finished their season with an 18-3-1 overall record. There were seventeen seniors on this team that have been working for a New York State championship their entire high school careers. Those seniors include Liam Robb, Charlie Bolesh, Kevin Caron, Patrick Coman, David McPeak, Mack Etoll, Philip Zollo, Nick Rosati, Adam Herne, Braden Krzykowski, Nate King, Adam Robinson, Ryan Bennett, Reilly Sizing, Justin Ristoff, DJ Caloia and Jack Grooms. The team also included Bo BenYehuda, Will Delano, Phillip Bogan, Eamon McPeak, Andrew Centore, Rusden Bryant, Thomas Coman, Kyle Puglisi, Dominic Demperio, Ryan Rolince, Kwinn Caputo, Griffin Grooms, Caleb Heagerty and Jackson Powers.
