How do I get in to see my counselor?
If you need to see your counselor, just stop in to the Guidance & Counseling Center to see if he or she is available. If your assigned counselor is not easily accessible and it is an emergency, you are welcome to speak with any counselor. If you wish to schedule an appointment for a later time/date, please ask one of the secretaries for assistance in scheduling a time in the counselor’s appointment book (located on the bookshelf outside each office). Appointments are generally scheduled only during study hall or lunch, but they can be scheduled at other times if you have no study hall or if it is an emergency. You should receive a pass from the Counseling Center in homeroom on the appropriate day. Check in with your teacher so that they can sign your pass and know where you will be.
How do I schedule a Parent-Teacher Conference for my child?
A parent-teacher conference is a helpful tool in managing your child’s educational experience. If you have communicated with your child’s teacher(s) via e-mail or phone but feel a meeting would benefit your child’s situation, counselors are happy to arrange and facilitate such a conference with either one specific teacher or several.
Conferences are usually scheduled during our Instructional Assistance (IA) period from 2:15 p.m. – 2:50 p.m., when teachers may be able to make arrangements to join us. Students are almost always asked to attend this meeting as they play a vital role in the discussion and creation of an action plan. There are special circumstances when it might be best to meet without the student as determined by the parent, counselor &/or teacher.
How do I request missed work when my child is out sick?
Encourage your son or daughter to develop a network of classmates to contact for work if only 1 or 2 days is missed.
If your child is going to be absent 3 or more days, call the Counseling Center early in the morning to request work. Work can be picked up between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. unless other arrangements have been made. If there is a planned absence (i.e. a scheduled surgery), the student should communicate with teachers well ahead of time to make arrangements for work that will be missed.
What is considered a passing grade?
A grade of 70% or above is considered passing for a course.
For Regents Exams, a score of 65 or above is passing.
How are grades determined?
By the end of a full-year course, students will have four ten-week marks. Each of these grades, and along with the final exam grade, will count as 20% of your final average. In other words, add the five marks together and divide by 5.
For semester courses, the method by which the final average will be computed is comparable to the above; each quarter grade is counted twice and the final exam once, and the sum is divided by 5 to determine a final grade. A passing grade at Westhill HS is 70%.
How do I make the honor roll?
In order for a student’s name to be placed on the Honor Roll (the high school has no high honor roll), he or she must have met the following criteria:
1.) An overall, rounded average of 85 or above. Physical Education (alternate-day course) counts half. Courses which meet after school are not considered for the Honor Roll.
2.) All of the student’s grades must be 80 or above.
What does an “I” (Incomplete) or “F” (Failing) on my report card mean?
An “F” means your true grade is less than 50%. This means that you may make up the work during the next ten weeks to bring this grade up to a maximum of 50% (failure to do so will result in the actual earned grade being posted).
An “I” or “Incomplete”, is sometimes used by teachers if a student has been legally absent for an extended period of time. This means that you have will have five weeks to make up missed work and have the “I” replaced by a numerical grade. In either case, talk to your teacher, decide together what work you will have to make up, and the date on which it is due.
How do I earn an unstructured period?
Unstructured, or free time, is a privilege unique to students in grades 11 and 12. It provides an opportunity for students to use periods as they wish, within certain guidelines.
11th Graders: If all grades for the previous quarter were 80 or above, he or she may have one (1) free period where the schedule permits.
12th Graders: If all grades for the previous quarter were 80 or above, he/she may have two (2) free periods where the schedule permits. If all grades were 70 or above, but not all 80 or above, he/she may have one (1) period of free time per day.
Each September, unstructured time is based on final course grades from the previous academic year.
