Why implement a Summer Reading Program?

The English/Language Arts standards set by the New York State Education Department require that students read a minimum of 25 books or the equivalent per year. This standard supports both research and what we believe at Westhill-students who read daily, not only improve as readers, but also have greater success in school.

What is the goal of the Summer Reading Program?

The primary goal of the Summer Reading Program is to encourage students to develop a life-long interest in reading, as well as to maintain their academic progress during the summer months. One of the best predictors of whether a student will function competently in school and go on to contribute actively to society is the level to which the student progresses in reading and writing.
